Shows I Like
I don’t have the time or inclination to write about every show I watch. If it’s worth reviewing, it needs to really really really grab my attention.
So, in lieu of writing full reviews, I’ll be keeping a somewhat-running log of shows I’ve watched and whether or not I recommend them to you too.
Agents of SHIELD - Netflix - 4 Claws - Goofy pseudo-military actions in an Avengers-adjacent universe.
Altered Carbon - Netflix - 5 Claws - In a relatively near future, rich people have ascended past mortality, while everyone else exists for their amusement. Outstanding hard-core sci-fi
Archer - Hulu - 5 Claws - The world’s best worst super spy, mostly being a drunk womanizer. Sounds terrible, is hilarious.
Avenue 5 - HBO - 2 Claws - A luxury space cruise ship gets knocked off course and you hate everyone on board. Go watch Passengers instead.
Black Mirror - Netflix - 4 Claws - Great anthology set of humans abusing technology, sometimes loses itself to navel-gazing
Community - Hulu - 4 Claws - An entertaining show about a bunch of average people doing average things
Dimension 404 - Hulu - 1 Claw - Watch the first episode only. Everything after that is terrible story telling and ruined concepts.
FarScape - DVD - 5 Claws - The best space opera you could ask for; amazing puppet aliens by the Jim Henson company
Firefly - Hulu - 5 Claws - Literally space cowboys.
Future Man - Hulu - 5 Claws - Review here
His Dark Materials - HBO - 5 Claws - A magnificently done word-for-word perfect take on the “His Dark Materials” book series
Locke & Key - Netflix - 4 Claws - Three children discover magic keys in the Locke family house, leading to existentially-horrifying adventures. The show was okay, the finale was outstanding
Love, Death, & Robots - Netflix - 5 Claws - Review here
MadMen - Netflix - 4 Claws - A serious drama about a (thankfully) long-gone era of American ad men in New York City
My Dead Ex - Hulu - 3 Claws - Cheesy teen romance that made for good background noise while I played video games
Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet - AppleTV+ - 2 Claws - It’s a show about the dev team behind creating a videogame. It has a few outstanding character that don’t get focused on nearly enough.
October Faction - Netflix - 1 Claw - Secret high-tech vampire hunters, maybe? I stopped watching the pilot
Ozark - Netflix - 2 Claws - I kept watching because I hate myself. This is one of those “everyone keeps making the worst choice possible” series.
Powerless - DVD - 5 Claws - A quirky take on life for the average person in a world where superheroes exist (specifically the DC universe)
Reprisal - Hulu - 1 Claw - Biker gangs in the 50s? I’m not sure. Someone had a cellphone and someone else had a hunger for revenge.
Rick & Morty - Hulu - 4 Claws - A drunk sociopath and his grandson travel across time and space for weird adventures. There are some truly outstanding episodes (“Total Rickall”) and some very generic ones.
Shameless - Netflix - 1 Claw - Do you like watching other people fail at life, then point and laugh at them? If so, you’re a terrible person and this is the show for you.
Silicon Valley - HBO - 4 Claws - A mockup of a software design team who try to revolutionize how the World Wide Web will work, mostly by failing up; the finale was a letdown
Star Trek: Discovery - Comcast All-Access - 2 Claws - Entertaining because of explosions, but mostly stupid plots that don’t actually make sense. It’s “Start Trek 2009: The Movie: The TV Show”
Stacked - Hulu - 1 Claw - Staring Pamela Anderson’s cleavage and lots of canned laughter; I stopped watching the pilot
Stumptown - Hulu - 3 Claws - The character development is a bit lacking and the show runners know what kind of show they want it to be yet, but it has Colbie Smulders.
The Americans - Netflix - 4 Claws - A spy thriller driven by anti-heroes, showing the other side of the Cold War
The Expanse - Amazon Prime - 5 Claws - Rock-solid hard-core science-fiction about a near-future interplanetary war between Earth, a colonized Mars, and asteroid belt miners
The Orville - Hulu - 5 Claws - “StarTrek: The Next Next Generation”
The Man in the High Castle - Amazon Prime - 4 Claws - A thought-provoking look at a world where the Nazi’s won WWII and invaded the US.
The Mandalorian - Disney+ - 3 Claws - A better movie than any StarWars movie, but still just a popcorn flick
The I-Land - Netflix - 1 Claw - A stupid premise made worse by easily dislikable characters. Something something virtual reality ethics test.
Venture Bros - Hulu - 5 Claws - Imagine if Johnny Quest grew up to be a whinging, neurotic failure who spent his life living on his late father’s coattails. Insane villains and constant references.
Watchmen - HBO - 5 Claws - Review here
Westworld - HBO - 5 Claws - Murder sex robots out for revenge!
