Bruce Almighty (2003)
mini review
Megan and I watched “Bruce Almighty,” the 2003 flick about Bruce (Carey) being temporarily gifted with the all-mighty powers of the All Mighty. The last time either of us saw it was roughly a decade ago, meaning we saw it with (mostly) new eyes.
The major thing I noticed was how Jim Carey just behaves as a man-child for the entire movie. And not just this one, but every one. As far as I can tell, Carey was type-cast as the screaming man-child for anything except his horrible attempt at a horror movie, “The Number 23.”
He’s also an anti-vaxxer, which is more than enough reason to not watch any of his new content, but this came out before that, so its okay.
That said: the rest of the movie is adorable. As always, Morgan Freeman is an absolute treat to see on screen and the pop culture references were slightly dated, but still good.
You could replace Carey with anyone (maybe Paul Rudd?) in a modern remake and have a very charming film.
And, nicely, this is one of the rare breed of movies that is entirely focused on religion without being dismissive of other religions, politically divisive, or designed to push someone’s agenda.
If you’re looking for a nostalgia-blast, I probably wouldn’t recommend this.
But if you’re looking for something to entertain you in the background while you do something else, this isn’t bad.
